What to expect in a hypnotherapy session
The following is some information on what to expect in a hypnotherapy session
Some expectations people have when being hypnotized is that they will feel remarkably different. The short answer is: Don’t expect to feel hypnotized. Many people come to the hypnotherapist thinking that there is something about trance which is markedly different from their “normal” state of consciousness.
This is certainly not the case. A light trance will likely feel no different from relaxation. Since trance is a normal, natural state, you will likely feel a feeling of familiarity, no matter how deep in trance you go. Trance is not about feeling “zoned out;” it is a normal natural state.
Hypnosis is a natural, altered state of consciousness which we all slip in and out of every day (e.g. driving, where your conscious mind is thinking about something else and your unconscious mind is driving ). and, even though it is 100% natural and normal, it remains one of the most fascinating phenomena of the human mind.
Another common example is watching TV. Have you ever been so involved in a show that you didn’t hear someone talking to you or calling your name? This is a similar state to hypnosis. Another example is when you hear of sports people being in the zone, that zone is the trance they are in during the game and being in a place of a highly focused state of attention.
What to expect
Expect to feel calm and relaxed. Hypnosis is a natural state where you feel increasing levels of relaxation and calmness.
Some misconceptions about hypnosis is some people think they will go to sleep. Hypnosis is different to sleep. You will be totally conscious, will hear what is being said and can stop the session at any time because you are in control throughout the session.
When some people are hypnotized they think things like, “I don’t know if I’m hypnotized or if I’m just relaxed.” If that thought runs through your head, keep an open mind, follow along with all the suggestions, find yourself agreeing with them and when the session is over we will talk about it then consciously.
All you have to do during the session is to want it to work for you, allow and accept the suggestions that you hear and make the changes you want. The brain has different levels of consciousness, or awareness, ranging from fully alert to drowsy to fully asleep, with variations in between. Hypnotic states occur naturally and spontaneously. Its as simple as allowing your self to be relaxed during the session.
In Summary, clinical hypnosis deliberately induces a trance kind of relaxed state of awareness. Once the mind is in a relaxed state, any therapeutic suggestions can have great effect on attitudes, perceptions and behaviours. Hypnosis accesses the ‘unconscious mind’, which is more open to new ideas and changes than the rational ‘conscious mind’. Hypnotherapy has worked for many thousands of people around the world and quite possibly may also work for you. Please contact me for any further information, I look forward to helping you.
